01What is covered
Every work is insured by HUNG under an all-risks policy from the moment it leaves the artist or our store until the moment it is collected from you. That cover runs in transit, during installation, and for the whole time the work hangs on your wall.
Accidental damage is covered. A knock while moving furniture, a picture that comes off the wall, a spill, a burst pipe, an accident involving a child or a pet — all covered.
- Accidental physical damage in your home.
- Damage in transit, during installation and during collection.
- Fire, flood, storm and escape of water.
- Theft following forced entry, where you report it to the police and give us the crime reference.
02The excess
Accidental damage carries an excess of $250 per incident. That is the most you pay for a covered claim, whatever the work is worth and whatever the repair costs.
The excess is charged once per incident, not per item and not per repair visit. If a single event damages more than one work, you pay one excess.
We waive the excess where damage is caused by our own handlers, by a failure of hanging hardware we supplied, or by a fault in the work itself.
03What is not covered
The following are not insured, and are charged to you at the insured value of the work. That value is set by the artist, is stated on your order confirmation, and is not a resale price.
- Deliberate damage, by you or by anyone you allow near the work.
- Alteration of any kind — cutting, painting over, re-framing, varnishing, signing.
- Any attempt to clean, treat, repair or restore the work yourself.
- Loss, or theft without evidence of forced entry.
- Damage caused by keeping the work outside the conditions in the Terms of Rental — direct sunlight, damp, heat, a bathroom or a kitchen.
- Damage caused by moving, re-hanging or lending the work without telling us.
- Gradual deterioration, fading from ordinary light, and inherent fragility of the materials.
04If something happens
Tell us within 48 hours, at hello@gethung.art or +1 212 555 0148. Reporting promptly matters more than the damage being small.
- Do not touch, clean or attempt to fix anything. Well-meant first aid is what turns a repairable work into a written-off one.
- Photograph the work where it is, including the surrounding area, before moving anything.
- If the work is at risk where it hangs — water, heat, a wall giving way — move it only as far as is needed to make it safe, flat and face up.
- We arrange assessment by a conservator, usually within five working days. There is no charge for the assessment.
05How a claim is settled
A conservator decides whether a work is repairable. If it is, we arrange and pay for the repair; you pay the excess and nothing else, and your membership continues uninterrupted while the work is away.
If the work cannot be repaired, and the damage is covered, you pay the excess. The artist is compensated at the insured value by the insurer, not by you.
If the damage is not covered, we invoice you the insured value, less the excess you have already paid, and the work becomes yours.
We will always tell you which category we think a claim falls into, and why, before invoicing anything.
06Your account while a claim is open
We do not suspend memberships or refuse future swaps because of a covered claim. Accidents are the reason the insurance exists.
We may decline to rent further works where there is a pattern of uncovered damage, or where a work has been kept outside the agreed conditions after we have raised it once.
